Neville Roach AO, achieves another sterling milestone.

As per the official announcement in the Government of India Gazette dated 30 June 2009, Mr. Neville Joseph Roach has been nominated as a member of the Indian Prime Minister's Global Advisory Council of Overseas Indians. Please click here to view the notification.

Mr Neville Roach AO, emigrated to Australia in 1961 and worked for IBM before moving to Fujitsu Australia, where he rose to the position of chief executive and, later, chairman. He chaired the National Multicultural Advisory Council from 1996 to 1999 and its successor, the Council for Multicultural Australia. He was awarded the Order of Australia in 2000, named the first Indian Australian of the Year in 2005 and in 2008 he was the first Australian to receive the Indian government's prestigious Pravasi Bharatiya Samman award.

The Global Advisory Council of Overseas Indians is a highly prestigious Council, chaired by the Prime Minister and comprising 20 Overseas Indians from around the world as well as the Minister for External Affairs, the Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs and the heads of their departments. He is the only appointee from Australia.

The other members of the council are eminent global leaders, including a Nobel Laureate, several Lords of the Realm, Management Gurus, CEOs of major global corporations like Indra Nooyi and Laxmi Mittal, etc.

In his characteristic modest and humble manner, Mr Roach described this historical achievement as ..
"... I realise that my own achievements are extremely modest in comparison to the other 19 appointees. There is only one respect in which I might match the others and that is my passion, commitment and effort in relation to India and the cause of stronger Australia-India relations.

Realistically, I am sure that my appointment is a reflection of the importance that the Government of India, from the Prime Minister down, attaches to Australia. This is very welcome and opportune. The bilateral relationship is important to both countries in terms of trade, investment and regional security. Most significantly, each country needs the other for its resources. - India needs Australia's mineral resources to fuel its strongly developing economy and Australia needs India's very valuable human resources to redress its endemic shortage of people and skills.

I hope the appointment will give me more opportunities to promote the Australia-India relationship, something that needs special attention because of the recent tensions caused by issues relating to Indian students in Australia"...
